Simple Home Remedies for Treating Cough

One of the most irritating ailments of the human body is a cough. Not only is it painful to the person suffering from it, but it also irritates the person who has to live with the said person suffering from a cough.

However, it isn’t incurable. There is plenty of “Gharelu Nuskhe” or home remedies that you can prepare yourself and treat this irritating ailment. The ingredients required to prepare the ayurvedic medicine can be easily found in your home. Depending upon the cause of origin, coughs are classified into two types: a Dry cough and Wet cough. In the discussion below, we will share some of the common remedies for treating them both.

Wet Cough


A wet cough is the body’s way of clearing any expectorate present in the throat or airways which could be a result of cold or changing weather. At the onset of a wet cough you can try these simple “Desi Nuskhe”.

Recipe 1

1.    Take a cup of water.
2.    Add about 6-8 teaspoons of peppercorns to it.
3.    Add 1/4th teaspoon of cumin.
4.    Add 1 teaspoon of crushed jaggery.
5.    Mix them well and boil the mixture.
6.    Let it cool and drink it to expel the phlegm that is blocking your throat.

Recipe 2

1.    Take a piece of fresh ginger.
2.    Grate in and extract juice from it.
3.    Take two teaspoons of this ginger juice and add two teaspoons of honey.
4.    Mix well and warm it slightly.
5.    Let it cool and drink to treat your wet cough.

Gharelu Nuskha

Remedy 3

1.    Take a medium sized onion (preferably white).
2.    Grate it and extract its juice.
3.    Add one tablespoon of money.
4.    Leave it for six hours.
5.    Have it 2-3 times daily to better your wet cough.

Dry Cough


Dry cough or a non-productive cough is often a result of a viral infection. Triggers that bring on a dry cough are pollutants, irritants, and allergens in the environment and even a sinus infection. The back of the throat gets inflamed or irritated, leading to dryness and coughing.

Honey is a natural home remedy for a dry cough as it soothes the irritated lining at the back of the throat. Depending on the severity of a cough, you can take 2 to 3 tablespoon of honey every day.

Remedy 1

1.    Take a glass of warm water.
2.    Squeeze fresh lime into it and add one tablespoon of honey.
3.    Mix it well and have this concoction a couple of times a day until a cough lasts.

Remedy 2

1.    Soak almonds in warm water overnight.
2.    Peel off their skin in the morning and make a paste.
3.    Add two tablespoons of butter to the paste along with two tablespoons of sugar.
4.    Mix well and consume twice a day until you get relief.

Remedy 3

1.    In a glass of slightly warm water, add a teaspoon of turmeric.
2.    Add a teaspoon of carom powder.
3.    Mix it well and have it a couple of times a day until a cough persists.
